What is L-arginine?

The name “arginine” is derived from the Latin word argentum, meaning silver. This is because this amino acid was first isolated as a silver salt. Arginine is present in nearly all proteins. It can be produced naturally by the body, but supplements of L-arginine are recommended in cases where the body’s L-arginine requirements cannot be provided by the body itself, for example in cases of illness or inadequate diet, or especially in cases of high physical exertion.

Arginine plays a role in many functions in the body. It plays a crucial role in muscle function and tissue growth; it also supports the most important components of the immune system, and has a marked effect on male fertility. In liver metabolism, it assists in the production of urea and the decomposition of ammonia. In the body, arginine quickly turns into the amino acid ornithine, and vice-versa. In hormone metabolism, L-arginine also plays an important role: it is necessary for the release of growth hormones and insulin.
