Avena sativa comes from Latin and means something like "real oats" or "seed oats". In addition to wheat, barley, rye and corn, oats belong to the plant family of grasses, which is one of the main cereals for a large part of the population. What makes Avena Sativa so special?
Avena Sativa is rich in essential and semi-essential amino acids (especially leucine, isoleucine and valine, also known as BCAAs), B vitamins, folic acid and niacin and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, zinc and manganese. With a carbohydrate content of 63% Avena Sativa offers a high protein content of 12% and additional essential fats of 5%. In addition, there is a lot of fiber, which make real oats to an ideal source of nutrients. Avena Sativa is specifically green oats, which is only harvested when it has reached its maximum nutrient content. The sowing starts in spring and already in August the plant is capable of harvesting. A mature Avena sativa plant usually grows to a height of 1.5 meters. Characteristic of real oats is the up to 30 cm long flower. The inflorescence usually contains 3 panicles, which show several branches down. The peculiarity of Avena Sativa is that two of the panicles are fertile. Avena Sativa is considered a self-pollinator. One speaks in this connection also of autogam. The plant is thus able to be pollinated by its own pollen and thus to increase the seed quantity. For some time, the drug composition has established itself as a dietary supplement and is used so particularly in the bodybuilding scene, but also in homeopathy. In the bodybuilding scene, there are some supplements in the form of capsules or tablets, which contain both the pure active ingredient of Avena Sativa, as well as shakes or training booster, which, among other things, have added the ingredient of the real oat.
