Lysine – For Supporting Muscle Building

L-Lysine is a proteinogenic amino acid and belongs to the group of essential amino acids. Essential amino acids must be obtained through food or supplements, as the body cannot produce them on its own. Foods that provide a good source of lysine include dairy products, eggs, fish, and meat. Plant-based foods such as soybeans or lentils also contain high amounts of lysine, whereas grain products tend to be low in lysine.

Lysine plays many important roles in the body. For example, it is used as a building block for collagen, which is a structural component of bones, tendons, blood vessel walls, and skin. Lysine helps protect blood vessels and may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular conditions. It also supports calcium absorption in the intestine, promotes bone growth, and is involved in the production of L-carnitine.

A deficiency in amino acids — whether due to frequent physical stress or an unbalanced diet — can negatively impact health and weaken the immune system. A specific deficiency of L-lysine may lead to fatigue, dizziness, or frequent concentration difficulties.

For athletes, insufficient lysine in the bloodstream means that processes responsible for muscle building cannot take place. The body is also no longer able to maintain muscle mass effectively. While a healthy adult requires around 1 to 1.5 grams of lysine per day, athletes generally have a significantly higher need for amino acids. This is due to regular physical exertion, which more quickly depletes amino acid stores, and because athletes rely heavily on amino acids to support muscle growth and muscle maintenance for effective training.

Lysine should ideally be taken before a meal with plenty of liquid. Consuming it with fluids helps the body absorb it more quickly. An overdose of lysine is highly unlikely, as the body either uses the lysine immediately or simply excretes any excess—similar to other amino acids.
