What is fenugreek?
Fenugreek is an ancient food and spice plant and belongs to the family of legumes. Fenugreek is an annual and can grow as tall as 48 inches. The name fenugreek is derived from the Latin word foenum-graecum (=Greek hay). Other names include ram’s horn clover, methi, philosopher’s clover and more.
The use of fenugreek can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. North of the Alps, Benedictine monks attempted to acclimate the plant to cloister gardens. And Charlemagne even once ordered fenugreek to be cultivated. Hildegard von Bingen recognized the outstanding dermatological benefits of fenugreek. Pastor Kneipp’s efforts made the use of fenugreek popular in German folk medicine. Kneipp praised the medicinal herb as a cureall and continually encouraged its cultivation. In India, fenugreek seeds are used as an aromatic agent, carminative, tonic and aphrodisiac.
Fenugreek seeds are a concentrated nutrient load!
Fenugreek seeds are composed of carbohydrates and lots of fiber, protein and high-quality fats. The seeds are remarkable for their high vitamin content and trigonellin concentration. Other important ingredients are essential amino acids, including 4-hydroxyisoleucine, various enzymes, the trace elements selenium, chromium, minerals, choline, beta-carotene, saponins, flavonoids and essential oils.
Fenugreek is also credited with the ability to activate the insulin effect, especially in liver and fat cells. According to recent findings, the consumption of fenugreek is thought to successfully support the strengthening of hair due to the plant's trigonellin content.
What are fenugreek's benefits for athletes?
The high-value nutrients contained in fenugreek can have a positive effect on the metabolism and arteries. As a result, the cells are able to improve their oxygen and nutrient supply. This effect is a basic requirement for maximum performance, an optimum immune system and other cellular growth. In addition, it is thought that saponins, which are contained in fenugreek, support muscle development in conjunction with intense resistance training.
